Lijiang Airport is pretty simple, after check-in and security check you either walk to the waiting room on the left or right depending on your departure gate number. The waiting rooms have toilets, one shop, and seats although probably not enough.

The flight was delayed for over an hour for some reason which was announced over the speaker in both mandarin and english. Luckily I made some new freinds to help pass the time (see the next post).

There was  a big cheer from all the people waiting when the plane arrived at the terminal and soon after we were all getting on board. read more

I only managed to see so many wonderful things in LiJiang thanks to two really beautiful people who spared their time and kindness……..and in temple, in the middle of the Black Dragon Pool Park, a Monk declared that my wonderful guides must be my student and my daughter!

This Buddhist monk was only half wise! They are actually both students, studying tourism in LiJiang..but not my daughter!

I really owe them a big thanks! So, welcome to Australia, anytime!

Shuhe Ancient Town (or city) is located in the city of Lijiang and less than 10 minutes by taxi from the ‘Old Town of Lijiang’ which is at the center of the city. It’s a place where you can easily find yourself forgetting what year you are in, as you walk along the original cobblestone streets and admire the old architecture while quite often running into locals still dressed in traditional clothing.

Lijiang Ancient City (Old Town) is very well marketed and well known, so it’s very busy and very touristy. Shuhe Ancient City has a far more authentic feel than the Old Town, as it is not so commercialised and not so busy. It’s an easy place to relax and stroll around while really taking in the China of old. read more

The Jade Water Village is located where a water spring exists at the base of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and this spring is scared to the local Naxi people. It is also the place where a famous American explorer, author, and botanist, Joseph Rock, lived for many years.

Now it is home to a large village including temples, traditional homes of the Naxi people, a theatre, and exhibits presenting the Naxi peoples Dongba culture.

The Black Dragon Pool is one of the must-visit places in Lijiang. The pool (or pond) is located in the Jade Spring Park in Lijiang, which is often referred to as Heilongtan Park, which is located at the foot of Elephant Hill.

The park contains many temples, pavilions, and beautiful ancient architecture, including its bridges which lead you into the stunning pavilions. It’s an incredibly peaceful place and well worth allowing some time to relax, wander and enjoy.

The photo below is of the Moon Embracing pavilion, on a perfect day the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain can be seen clearly in the distance and the water of the pool shows it’s true jade green color. Even on a not so perfect day, such as when this shot was taken, it is still a stunningly beautiful place to be! read more

The Sleepy Inn is located in Shuhe Ancient Town which is a short taxi ride away from the more famous part of Lijiang being the ‘Old Town’. Don’t let this put you off though, as Shuhe Ancient Town feels much more authentic than the Old Town and it’s much more relaxed.

The Sleepy Inn is in a traditional ancient style Chinese building featuring two levels and a courtyard. It doesn’t feel like you are staying in a backpackers or a hostel, or a hotel for that matter, this place feels like a home.  It has real warmth and charm.  read more

I booked this flight through the airline booking service at the Tibet Hotel Chengdu. I booked it at the last minute so I’m quite sure that I paid through the nose for this flight at 790rmb for an economy seat. I think if you booked with elong or ctrip in advance you could probably get a flight for half that price.

Flights may vary in price depending on the day, for example a flight going to Lijiang on a Monday can be half that of a flight going on a Friday, being a tourist destination that of course makes sense. read more
