UPDATE: the ferry terminal has moved to a new nearby building, see here for updated info. There are multiple ways to get from Shenzhen to Macau including via bus, ferry or even a helicopter. Being in Nanshan District of Shenzhen I chose to go via the ferry at the nearby Shekou Port.
Shekou Port is pretty simple, basically, it’s just one big room, and as you walk through the front door head left to see the ticketing counters where there is even staff who thankfully speak English. At the terminal, there is a small stall selling items from a bakery, a couple newsstands and a stand selling mobile phone sim cards for Hong Kong and Macau. There is also 2 different ATMs and the one I tried accepted a foreign-issued Visa card, plus there is a currency exchange.
I purchased the ticket on the day and got a return ticket for 300 RMB, which offered a small saving over buying separately. The trip takes just over an hour and the ferry lands at Tapai Temporary Ferry Terminal.
The the 9.30AM ferry from Shekou to Tapai Macau, on a weekday at least, wasn’t too busy, there was plenty of spare seats. The trip back was a little busier, but still with seats to spare.
The ferry itself is by no means new, I’d say it’s done a few trips to Macau and back in its day, but at no point did it concern me or make me feel unsafe. It’s a fairly slow and steady cruise with nothing really exciting to talk about….it just gets you from Shenzhen to Macau.
The Tapai Ferry Terminal looked like it was undergoing some work at the time of writing (I guess that’s why they call it temporary!), but it is a pretty straightforward place to navigate, you go through customs which is hassle free and then a few more steps and your outside.
As for transfers from Tapai Ferry Terminal, there are taxis and plenty of free courtesy buses heading to the various Casinos. So if you’re heading into Tapia jump on a City of Dreams or a Venetian shuttle bus and if your heading into the main center of Macua look for a Wynn Casino, MGM or Starworld shuttle bus.
Many of the hotels also operate their own courtesy bus service from the ferry terminal.
