It’s Christmas in China…

Chinese people love celebrating things, and not only there own traditional festivals but also western ones too, and Christmas especially. Here in Shenzhen all the retail shopping malls have grand decorations throughout including themed displays, large trees and big custom made models of Santa, reindeers and the like. Even smaller shops and markets are dressed up with tinsel and decorations.

Restaurants throughout the city also get into the festive spirit with many, particularly the popular buffets, putting on western style Christmas menus offering up roast turkey, hams and all the trimmings plus some.

At first perhaps it’s easy to see that, like everywhere, Christmas is strongly hyped up by the retailers for obvious reasons, also Chinese people love celebrating and decorating things, plus that the younger generation are very interested in western culture, add to all that is that Shenzhen is a little influenced by Hong Kong where they really get into the spirit of Christmas and retailing goes crazy…

But, there is also a surprising fact which may be helping drive the Christmas phenomenon – apparently there’s more Christians in China than in Italy.

Yep, China is officially the new capital of Christianity based on subscribers anyway. Estimates guess there’s about 54 million Christians in China and just 47.4 million in Italy, but I guess China’s large population base means there going to be the largest of anything…
